Duncan Thomas Music Course -  Groove The House

What level is the course aimed at?

The course is aimed at intermediate producers. You do not need be a pro, but you just need to make sure you know how to get around Ableton and are aware of the main terms and functions. It will also help to have a general grasp of synthesis and sound design. 

What do you need to complete the course? 

Nothing apart from your own copy of Ableton Live. Ableton 11 or 12 is absolutely fine. 

How does the course work? 

The course will consist of an online session every week lasting two hours on Tuesdays from 18:00 - 20:00. Each session will focus on a different topic and consist of a 1 and a half hour demonstration then 30 mins of Q and A. 

What is included?

  • An 8 week course including a two hour online session each week. 

  • Around 70 classic drum sample packs and all of Duncans own Sample Packs. 

  • Detailed track breakdowns. 

  • Track feedback from Duncan on anything you make during the 8 weeks of the course.

  • Feedback from Duncan at the end of the course, including areas where each student can improve and what steps to take to improve their production skills going forward. 

  • At the end of the course Duncan will host an in person listening session at his studio for those who are in London. This will be a chance to meet in person and play any of your tracks in Duncans studio. 

Topics of the course? 

  • Making lively drums which have a unique feel. Focusing on groove, swing, and sound design. 

  • Making well balanced basslines, and creating effective bassline layers. 

  • Synthesis and Sound Design.

  • Introduction into music theory.

  • How to write pads, chords, and harmonic textures. 

  • Writing interesting and relevant melodies. 

  • Creating FX, Vocal hooks, and ear candy. 

  • Arrangement. 

  • Mixing, and polishing. 

  • Approaching creativity, how to let your sound become by itself. Trying not to force your music.
